Sentimental Sundays – A Special Challenge

It’s time for the new Sentimental Sundays challenge and this week we have something very special for you. For our grown up crafters, we are challenging you to make a card or project for a special woman in your life. Don’t forget your sentiment! The challenge is being sponsored by both Deedee’s Digis and Raindrop Echo Designs. (More info on the special challenge after my card.)

With Mother’s day just a week away, I decided to make a card for mother in-law, who is a special woman in my life. I just found this whimsical dandelion digital image at Pink Petticoats and couldn’t wait to use it. I paired it with a sentiment from Raindrop Echo Designs.

We also have an additional, fun challenge for you this week. We'd like to see the kids get creative too! Gather your child, grandchild, niece, nephew, even a neighbor and get creative together! My daughter, Liz, has been wanting to learn how to use my Copic markers so we spent an evening together this week coloring. I think she really caught on to using them pretty quickly. She used “Cute Little Vase” from Moon Cookie Gallery, a new artist for Whimsy Stamps. Below is the book mark she made with the image she colored . Please stop by her blog (http://craftsbyliz.blogspot.com/) to see a bigger image and to leave her some love.

Stop by the Sentimental Sundays blog to download the free sentiment set from Raindrop Echo Designs and link your project for a special lady (plus a sentiment) and your kids challenge project. You can see some additional DT and special (children) DT members there too. I can’t wait to see what you make!

Please stop back later today for my post for the Whimsy Stamps May Digi release blog hop.

Thank you for stopping by!

    DD's Paper Pieced Bear

My daughter made this card for St. Patrick's day by paper piecing a digital image. She wanted it for the SBS29 challenge - Think Green and the Daisy Doodles challenge #3-Bears. The image was a freebie from There's Magic in the Air.

    Thank you for looking.

Monday with Lindsay - Inspired by Nature

Our theme this week for Lindsay's Stamp Stuff is "inspired by nature" which was really easy and enjoyable for me. I tend to gravitate towards stamps with nature in them any how and Lindsay has a lot of stamp sets with birds, flowers, and leaves to work with.

When I sat down Thursday afternoon to start working on my card, my daughter also wanted to make a card. We both used the same image from Birds & Branches but our cards are totally different.

**Updated - This card made the top 5 in the Cupcake Craft Challenge.

The sentiment comes from a freebie from Lindsay's blog which was designed to coordinate with Birds & Branches.

This is my 8-year old daughter's card using the same image. I am so proud of her because she did EVERYTHING on this card except cut the card base and tie the knot in the floss in the button. She loves using my Big Shot and nesties. I think I might have to start watching my crafting supplies. :) She made this card to enter in Challenge #2 Buttons on Aimee's Challenge blog which encourages children to enter. I do not have a supplies list at the bottom of this post for her card because all the paper came from my scrap bin. (SU white CS for card base, image printed on GP CS)

Thank you for stopping by today. Please check to see how the rest of the DT was inspired by nature.

    Valentines Treats with Lindsay

This week Lindsay (of Lindsay's Stamp Stuff) asked us to make some cute packaging for some Valentine's Day treats. I made 2 projects using Love Grows Here. The first is a project that I did on my own and the second is a project that I made with my 8-year old daughter.

I designed this box myself using Spellbinders Label One die for the top and bottom and using strips of paper to make the sides. Once I got my head wrapped around it, it was pretty easy and made a cute little box. I will put the details at the bottom of this post if you are interested. I used my Cricut to cut the heart and the "4" and "U" and paper pieced the little bird.

My daughter also wanted to make some Valentine treats. I already had an idea of what I wanted to do, but I thought I would let her do it to gage how easy it would be for a kid to make. Overall, I would say pretty easy with help from a parent to help with the printing and cutting. DD was able to trace the templates, cut, color and assembly mostly on her own.

To make the bag topper, I printed out 2 copies of Lindsay's printable recipe template from Recipe Digital Stamp set (at 65% & 63% of original size) to use as a template. (It is folded over the top and is just straight on the back.) I picked these sizes because they fit my little bag. You could also use almost any one of the Nesties label dies that you have, but I wanted to give it a go with out using Nesties just to see what I could do with out them.

The circle tag was a freebie from Lindsay's blog. (And, in case you were wondering, yes, this is for Troy Bolton. If you have daughters you probably know who that is. If not, trust me you are not missing much. I wonder if he is going to show up to get his treats?)

I hope you enjoyed my projects and have a very Happy Valentine's Day. Remember, if you want the instructions to make the little box, stick around and read them at the very bottom of the post.

Please stop by the rest of the DT to check out their projects.

    • EMBELLISHMENTS & TOOL: pop dots, Stampin' Up markers, small bag
    Instructions for the Treat Box:

Stick with me, this is the first box I made on my own (with out a template or using my Cricut) and it was pretty easy. I will explain the best I can. I have some photos but they didn't turn out well. The lighting was horrible. Click the pictures to make them larger.

First cut out the shape you want to use for the top and bottom of you box. I used the 2nd largest die from Spellbinders Label One Nestabilities die set. Use sturdy card stock. To make the sides of the bottom part of the box, I cut a strip 1-1/2 x 11 inches long. I scored the long way at 1/2" on the side that will be inside the box. Then, scoring the short way across the strip, I scored the width at every 2-3/4". You will be creating the 4 corners of the box and have a little piece left over. It will look something like this picture.
I then clipped the score marks that would be in the corners at the bottom of the box so that the paper would fold easier.

I then used adhesive along the narrow bottom flap and attached to my box bottom. Use a strong adhesive so that it stays together. It will look something like this.

I cut and adhered a piece of DP to the inside to make it look nicer.

I then followed similar steps to make the top of the box. I cut a piece of paper that was about 1 x 11". I scored at 1/2" to make the strip that adheres to the top of the box. Then I scored the strip to make the corners at a little less than 2-3/4" so that it would slip into the bottom to put the lid on. I have to admit I didn't write down the exact measurements. (Sssshhhh don't tell any one but I hate fractions.)

I hope these instructions make sense to you. If you have any questions please leave them in the comments or you can email me using the addy in my profile and I will answer as quickly as I can.

Thank you for sticking with me for this long post!

DD's Feeling Ducky and Winter Fest

My DD wanted to make a card for the Clearly Delightful Monthly Challenge because she loves the adorable duck stamp they are offering participants. She also decided to try her first sketch challenge by using the sketch that Kim Marie created for the Sisterhood of the Blogging Stampers (SBS29). She made this card to give to her Great Grandma who is currently in a nursing home recovering from a fall. She took her time, asked a lot of questions, and put together a wonderful card. Look at the sponging! She didn't want the duck floating in the air so I told her how to make a background. She has also been looking at the projects made by other kids and really was impressed by Kayla. I love this card!

I thought I would share a couple of pictures from Saturday. Here a picture of DD and me freezing at Winter Fest. Boy, the wind was COLD but we still had a good time. I also included a picture of my favorite ice sculpture. I was just amazed by the creativity and ingenuity of these artists.

I'll be back tomorrow morning my Lindsay's Stamp Stuff DT posting show some fun ways to package Valentines treats.

DD's projects and a challenge blog for kids

My DD is going to enter this card in the Little Hands Do Crafts challenge #2 animals. She did this card completely by herself, including using the paper cutter (with supervision). If you haven't seen it, this is a new challenge blog that encourages kids to get involved with crafting. (Thank you Rhonda from SBS29 for giving me the heads up.)

She also has been very busy the past week working on her first research paper and poster board for school. (Yes, 2nd grade!) The paper was due last Friday and her poster board is due next Friday but we decided to get it done this week end. (They were encouraged to type the information for the board and had to use at least 5 pictures.) We helped, but she did the research, filled out the questionnaire for the paper, chose and arranged the info. I did print out the letters using my Cricut to help her. My husband also suggested getting one of those greeting cards where you can record a message but using cougar sounds from the internet. She really enjoyed doing this project and is looking forward to her presentation next week. (Funny fact: My first research paper (that I remember) was on cougars.... Strange how that happens.)

I'll be back tomorrow with my Lindsay's Stamp Stuff DT post.

    DD's Good News!

She (my daughter, not Hilda) is so excited she has been dancing around the house.
Isn't that sweet??!!! Thank you Hilda!

    Card making with DD

Friday evening my daughter (8-yrs old) wanted to make cards with me. (I think it was a stall tactic to avoid cleaning her room, but I enjoyed the time with her any how.)

She picked "Cherry on Top" from Lindsay's Stamp Stuff Sweet Stuff digital stamp set. She colored using her own pencils, my glitter pens, and used the same paper as I was using. (Details below.) Inside she wrote "Have a very cherry day". If you can, please leave her some comments, she loves reading them.

I made this card using the Mojo Monday (#119) sketch for inspiration. The grumpy cow (isn't she cute?) is from the Rusty Pickle's Digital Delights. I don't know about you, but I have definitely had "those" days...or so my husband tells me. :)

    .
This card also qualifies for Crafty Creations challenge #48 - make your new year glitter. Although it doesn't show up really well in the photo, the polka dot paper is glittery and I used a glitter pen on the cow bell, the bow, and the edges of the flower. The ribbon is also shimmery.

It also qualifies for the What's Digital Stamping Group recycling challenge on Yahoo. The buttons were pulled off a card I received quite a while ago. The ribbon is also recycled. (It was still sticky on one end and has some snags which I put under the DP panel.) I am not sure where it came from but it was at the bottom of my ribbon basket. I wanted to used more recycled items but it just did not work out.
    .

By the way, come join us in the What's Digital Stamping Group on Yahoo. It is free to join and the members share tips and trade advice (including where to find freebie). Everyone is welcome whether you are experienced with digital stamps or just trying them out for the first time.

Crafting with DD - Christmas box

Here is a box made by my 8-year old daughter. She used my Cricut (with help) to cut the box, colored the image from Polly Craft, cut and glued it all together. She even asked to use the fluffy stuff (Liquid Applique) on the cuffs and wanted to sponge the edges of the image. Didn't she do a great job? Please give her some love.
