Paw Print Ornaments

I saw this project on Pinterest and decided to make ornaments using my dogs paw prints for our tree.

Here is my results:

2013-01-01ornament both WM

My ornaments did not turn out quite as well as the ones here, but I still like them.  It is especially timely since we lost one of our dogs shortly after this.

Some things I learned doing this project:

  • My dogs do not like their feet touched (already knew that) and especially do not like getting their paws pressed into clay.
  • My dogs have toe nails.  Said toe nails sink into the clay and leave funny marks for you to either to try to smooth out or ignore.
  • Do not clean your dogs feet with white paper towel before pressing them into black clay.  It leaves white lint in clay.
  • Learn to live with toe nail and lint issues because trying to start over with step 1 just was not worth the doggy drama.    Once they are on the tree, they’ll look just fine.
  • A glass of wine is very good after a project like this.

If you like this project, don’t be discourage by my experience.  Stop by the Sew Doggy Style to see her ornament and read her instructions.

These are really great!!! What a great keepsake to have of your pawprints!

Last year as one of our gag gifts for our grab bag - I brushed Lily and then put all her fur in a glass ornament. It was strictly a gag but don't you know when I came across it this year when I was decorating - I was so happy to have her fur!

Another keepsake I just love is when we lost Pinky - my foster dog - one of the shelter workers kept some of her hair. Her sister makes jewelry and put some of the hair in a holder with resin (like this: http://www.resinobsession.com/Friday-Fun-Freebie/152/Resin-supplies-giveaway---pewter-jewelry-bezels.html) and it's a great keepsake!

Hilarious story Cheryl. I can't just see you now.... I struggle to get a paw print every time my dogs have to sign the cards they send out.

The ornaments are perfect. I like the shiny black and the red ribbon. I can't tell you had a struggle at all.

I am so chuckling over your comments, Cheryl! Isn't it funny how you envision things in your head, and how they actually go down? But your one comment is totally true.....they look just fine. Perfect, in fact. And so very, very sweet!
